Will 33 Inch Tires Fit a Stock Tacoma?

Find out if 33 inch tires will fit a stock Toyota Tacoma without rubbing. Discover clearance issues, minor mods, and lift requirements.

The Stock Setup

Off the showroom floor, a modern Tacoma TRD Off-Road usually runs a 265/70R16 tire, which measures out to just under 31 inches in diameter. The wheel wells are optimized for this specific geometry, ensuring maximum up-travel during off-road articulation.

Can You Cram a 33-Inch Tire in There?

The short answer is no, not without issues. A true 33-inch tire (like a 285/75R16 or 285/70R17) will not fit a completely stock Tacoma without significant rubbing. The tires will hit the front bumper plastics, the mud flaps, and most importantly, the Upper Control Arms (UCAs) if you use factory wheels.

Clearance Issues and When They Happen

Rubbing on a stock Tacoma attempting to run 33s doesn't just happen at full lock. It happens during:

  • Pulling into slightly elevated driveways.
  • Braking hard while turning.
  • Hitting minor dips on the highway.

The body mount structure behind the front tire is notoriously intrusive on Tacomas.

Minor Modifications Needed

If you are determined to run a 33-inch tire, you have two paths:

  1. The Leveling Kit: Adding a 2-inch leveling kit up front instantly creates the necessary vertical clearance.
  2. The Trimming Path: If you refuse to lift, be prepared to remove your mud flaps, aggressively trim the inner fender liners, heat-gun the plastics, and potentially buy wheels with a negative offset (like a 0mm or -12mm) to clear the control arms.
