How Speedometer Error Works

Your vehicle's computer doesn't explicitly know how fast you are moving; it calculates speed by monitoring how fast your axles or transmission output shaft are rotating. The computer is programmed to assume you have a specific tire size—meaning it assumes you travel a specific distance per rotation (the tire's circumference).

When you install a bigger tire, the circumference increases. Your axle still spins at the same RPM, but you are covering far more ground per rotation than the computer realizes.

The Real World Impact

Because you are traveling farther with each rotation, your speedometer will read slower than your actual speed.

• Example: If you upgrade from a 30-inch tire to a 33-inch tire, you have increased the diameter by 10%.
• If your speedometer says you are going 60 MPH, you are actually traveling at 66 MPH! This is a fast track to receiving an unexpected speeding ticket.

The Odometer Effect

Speedometers aren't the only victims. Your odometer calculates mileage using the same logic. If your tires are 10% larger, your odometer will record 10% fewer miles than you actually traveled. Over 50,000 miles, your dash might only read 45,000 miles.
